An Amazing Deck Building Game that Improves Upon Marvel!

An Amazing Deck Building Game that Improves Upon Marvel!
Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game is a fantastic new card game from Upper Deck. Based on the Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game system (my holy grail of deck builders), Legendary Encounters offers a whole new adventure- several adventures in fact. The game comes with a beautiful playmat and hundreds of cards. Players take on character roles and use the cards in their decks to attack aliens or to recruit stronger cards to help them. Just like Marvel, the game is incredibly nuanced and a whole lot of fun. Utilizing various "Hive" decks, players can recreate play from all four of the Alien movies. Perhaps the greatest innovation that Legendary: Encounters brings to the table, however, is the coordinate ability. Essentially, a player can lend another player his card's abilities during that player's turn, and he gets to draw another card to boot. This really increases the cooperative aspect of the Legendary system, and ensures that all players work together as a team. I felt that the best number of players for Marvel was 2-3 (it plays up to five), but I really think that the more players you have with Legendary: Encounters will make it a more enjoyable experience. There is a downside to Legendary: Encounters: this game is a bear to organize, take down, and set up. Just like Marvel, it will take you forever to get everything out and back again after each play. That can be a little frustrating. Still, given how much fun this game is to play, you can forgive it this drawback. Legendary: Encounters may just have replaced Marvel as my deck builder of choice.
